The Yaran Story

Shahyar and Faryar Gorjy both moved to Australia during the 70s. They both worked in the oil and gas industry for over 20 years and during this time they had a few investment properties on the side. They first began with small developments, subdividing one block into a duplex and making small profits. Then there was an opportunity for us to go on to bigger things.

Initially, the brothers started by working from the dining room table at home. This eventually lead to a transportable office in the backyard and they hired an accountant/secretary to help out.

Several years later the volume of work and the business had expanded so much that they both moved out of their current roles in the oil and gas industry to work fulltime in the new business. Since then the staff and business has just continued to grow and blossom.

Yaran’s main focus is on house and land packages. Although the Yaran process means the development is built without them being too involved, they do very much believe in providing exceptional after sales service to all of their clients.  If there’s any design errors or problems, they will fix and pay for it so that our client in the best interest of their client, and to keep true to their fixed price policy. The goal is to remain honest and reputable developers.

Fast forward a few more years and now Yaran is the largest recipient of NRAS in WA and the first in Australia to get over 1000 allocations from the federal and state government under the round 3 application. Getting NRAS allocations was a huge challenge and the application process required a huge amount of very precise information to be provided, ticking all the boxes. But it was a gamble that definitely paid off – handsomely.

Yaran is now in the forefront to deliver over 1000 houses by mid June 2012! As a result, the company has rapidly grown from 8 people to almost 50 and they currently have 120 development projects going on, with many more in the pipeline for months to come. Getting these allocations has totally transformed the business for the better. NRAS creates a win- win situation for Yaran, investors, tenants, and the government. There are especially huge incentives for investors with $100,000 over a period of 10 years.

In all their developments Yaran prefer low key, smaller developments with approximately 5-20 units. With one exception, the largest current project is 42 units in Canning Vale, which presents a challenge as definitely a very different and on a much larger scale than their first project!

So, what does it all mean… a Q & A with Shahyar and Faryar

Shahyar: “It took us about 15 seconds to choose the name “Yaran”. Ah, maybe, 2 minutes really, which probably sounds ridiculous considering most companies spend days and days deciding their name! It was back in 1995 or 96, we were driving on the freeway coming back from a meeting in a government department. Faryar said “we should choose a name for ourselves.” I said, “Okay, what name should we have?” Then Faryar suggested ‘Yaran’. And I said “Sounds good!”

Both our first names end with ‘Yar’ which is Farsi (Persian) for the word ‘friend’. Adding ‘an’ makes it plural. We went home and got ‘the okay’ from both our Aussie wives and it was settled!

So, we would then on call our business a name that connected the both of us, as we were running this business together, a name that reflects our Iranian origin and a truly friendly name! We thought we were so clever, coming up with a great name.”

Faryar: “Challenges were many, as there are at the beginning of any new business that you start, especially in an industry that was very different to the one we had previously working. Initially, we didn’t know anyone in the industry and people were a bit unsure of us, because they didn’t know who we were. They were probably thinking ‘who are these people with funny names?’ But if you do the right thing by people, treating them honestly and with respect, you get a name for yourself as people with integrity. Then you’re unusual name becomes more an advantage because people think “Oh yeah, those guys – yeah, they are alright.” People remember you when you’re a little different.”
